Roxanna Panufnik Commission: Orpheus' first Orpheus piece – Orpheus Sinfonia

Roxanna Panufnik Commission: Orpheus’ first Orpheus piece

An Orpheus first!

We are over the moon to have commissioned acclaimed composer Roxanna Panufnik. Our first work inspired by our namesake, Panufnik’s piece Orfeus: To Hell and Back is the latest in our series of world premieres by the UK’s leading women composers.

It’s been a brilliant collaboration. Last year, we held a series of fantastic exploration workshops where she worked with Orpheus musicians and our exceptional cello soloist Jonathan Swensen (winner of Windsor Festival International String Competition) to explore sound-worlds and creative ideas for this new work.

The result, Orfeus: To Hell and Back, is Panufnik’s first major cello work. Story-driven and richly colourful, the music paints incredible narrative soundscapes to bring Orfeus’ classic journey to life, even recreating the ancient Greek aulos with modern orchestral colours.

Come and join us next week to hear the world premiere of this fabulous new work, in a programme full of discovery.
